With artificial intelligence (AI) experiencing rapid development in an era of unprecedented challenges posed by climate change, ADFIAP conducted a 5-day comprehensive hybrid course entitled, “AI, FIs, Climate Change and You!” in Manila, Philippines on 23-26 July and 6 August 2024. The course, which Dr Eduardo Canela, PhD, conducted, was attended by crucial development finance officers from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) of India and Cambodia’s Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (ARDB). The participants found learning very informative through lectures and engaging with group discussions and hands-on workshops that used various existing AI apps right after every theoretical concept presentation.
The first four days of the course (23-26 July 2024) covered presentations and in-depth discussions of critical topics such as Financial Institutions, Climate Change, and AI; Customer Analytics and Expanding FIs Portfolio with AI; Boosting Loan Processing Performance with AI; Streamlining FI Organization and Functions; Advance Loan Evaluation and Financial Modeling with AI; Ethical and Responsible Use of AI; and AI Deployment Roadmaps: Challenges and Best Practices. The fifth day of the seminar-workshop (6 August 2024) culminated with the capstone project presentation in the form of a video that used AI. Both NABARD and ARDB creatively completed their videos on their respective roadmaps that integrated climate change and AI.
The participants deepened their understanding of the symbiotic relationship among AI, FIs, and climate change and had the opportunity to network with fellow development finance professionals. This connection to a larger community can provide support and inspiration in their ongoing journey with AI. They also learned practical strategies for integrating AI technologies into climate-related initiatives and gained access to valuable resources and materials for their learning journey on AI.
As AI continues to revolutionize the entire financial system, FIs’ knowledge and application of AI are not just beneficial but imperative. AI is a risk management tool for achieving their mandate and ensuring sustainability. This understanding of the necessity of AI can motivate FIs to embrace this technology for their future success.
