ADFIAP Explores New Frontier in AI-Assisted Climate Finance Training Workshop

ADFIAP recently concluded its groundbreaking course, “Future-Proof Finance: AI Strategies for Climate Action,” establishing a new paradigm for professional DFI staff development. The four-day in-person training was held in Makati, Metro Manila, from March 24 to 27, followed by a capstone project presentation via Zoom on April 10. The course showed how AI can revolutionize not just climate finance but also core banking operations such as procurement, loan appraisals, supervision and assessment, contracts, and climate funding design and development.

Led by Dr. Eduardo Canela with the support of Ms. Cressida M. Alday-Mendoza, ADFIAP Senior Executive, and Mr. Rem Anthony Laodeño Jr., IT Specialist, the course demonstrated a revolutionary approach by integrating AI as an active member of the facilitation team. This pioneering methodology allowed participants to perform richer problem analytics, deep research, data analytics, agenda conversations, evidence-based learning, and experience firsthand how AI tools can enhance traditional banking functions and climate initiatives.

AI’s Dual Role: Course Facilitator and Documentation Assistant

The course broke new ground by employing AI not just as a topic of discussion but as an integral component of the learning experience itself. Participants engaged directly with specialized AI tools, including Deepseek, Monica, Co-Pilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Julius, Ideogram, In-video, and various image generation platforms. The course documentation and transcription were captured using AI tools like TurboScribe and Adobe Firefly, demonstrating practical efficiency gains.

Transforming Banking Operations

Participants discovered advanced capabilities of AI in supporting traditional banking functions, successfully using these tools to:

– Brainstorm and structure annual reports

– Develop marketing strategies and campaign materials

– Generate diagrams and perform scientific, statistical, and credit analyses

– Draft project documents such as concept notes and proposals

– Conduct deep research on specialized climate change topics

Rather than replacing human expertise, the course highlighted how AI serves as a powerful enabler, allowing banking professionals to focus on high-value activities while automating routine tasks.

From Conservative to Active Implementers

Representatives from India, Cambodia, and the Philippines participated in this hands-on exploration of AI applications. The course addressed widespread concerns about AI potentially displacing jobs, instead demonstrating how it can enhance efficiency and effectiveness across banking operations.

“The learning environment was highly engaging,” noted the post course report. “The participants expressed their enthusiasm for the hands-on, exploratory methodology. The use of AI tools sparked curiosity and encouraged active participation throughout the course.”

For ADFIAP members interested in exploring AI applications within their institutions, comprehensive course materials, including presentations, research findings, and capstone projects, have been made available on the ADFIAP community platform.
